He chose College of the Desert in Palm Desert where he could stay at his grandmother’s house and play golf every day. He turned pro in 1998 and won his Canadian Tour Pro card a month later, finishing as the low Canadian. He proceeded to miss his first ten cuts as a pro. With much perseverance he has become a mainstay on Tour for many years.

After rounds of 67 and 66, Matt found himself in the last group on Saturday. He was paired with PGA Tour player Alex Rocha. They exchanged birdies with each other all day, but it was Matt who took the lead heading into Sunday’s final round. On that final day Matt was holding on to a one shot lead against Rocha and Stuart Anderson with two holes left. After Rocha bogied 17 it was Anderson, playing alongside Matt, who made a charge, sinking a 20 footer for eagle. Matt hung tough and birdied. They both holed 20 foot putts for birdie on the last hole, forcing a playoff. Matt won the tournament on the first playoff hole in front of one of the biggest galleries ever witnessed on the Canadian Tour.
